Latvia Boosts Ukraine's Energy Resilience with €200,000 Contribution
Riga, Latvia – Latvia has announced a significant contribution of €200,000 to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, aiming to assist in the urgent restoration of Ukraine's power grid. The allocation comes as Ukraine faces intensified Russian attacks targeting its critical energy infrastructure, particularly as winter approaches. The donation was confirmed by Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže on December 17, 2025.
The Ukraine Energy Support Fund: A Vital Mechanism
The Ukraine Energy Support Fund was established in April 2022 as a collaborative initiative between the Minister of Energy of Ukraine and the European Commissioner for Energy. Its primary objective is to counteract the devastating impact of Russian attacks on Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure. The Fund is managed by the Energy Community Secretariat, an independent executive institution based in Vienna, Austria, and serves as a transparent mechanism for governments, international financial institutions, and corporate donors to provide financial support. Contributions to the Fund are utilized to finance essential needs for Ukrainian energy companies, including equipment, spare parts, technical items, fuels, and services required for infrastructure repair and maintaining energy and heat supply.
Context of Russian Attacks on Ukraine's Energy Grid
Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, Russia has consistently targeted Ukraine's energy system, with attacks intensifying in late 2025. These deliberate strikes aim to destabilize the country's electricity supply and have caused widespread damage to power plants, transmission lines, and natural gas infrastructure. Ukrainian officials and analysts report that these attacks are pushing the energy grid to the brink of collapse, leading to significant power shortages and outages across the country. The ongoing bombardment poses a severe threat to Ukraine's ability to maintain essential services, particularly during the colder months.
International Solidarity for Ukraine's Energy Security
Latvia's contribution is part of a broader international effort to support Ukraine's energy resilience. Foreign Minister Braže emphasized the urgency of such aid, stating, 'Russia is weaponizing winter – we must urgently step up support for Ukraine's energy sector. Ukraine's security is our security.' This support is crucial for enabling Ukrainian energy companies to repair damaged facilities and ensure a stable power supply for citizens and critical services. The Fund has united 33 donors from 22 countries, with announced contributions reaching €1.2 billion, demonstrating a collective commitment to helping Ukraine withstand these challenges.
