Chinese Ice Dancers Under ISU Investigation Following Toy Missile Incident at Grand Prix

Investigation Launched by International Skating Union

The International Skating Union (ISU) has initiated an investigation into Chinese ice dancers Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing following an incident at the Cup of China Grand Prix figure skating event. The pair was observed with what appeared to be a toy ballistic missile in the 'kiss and cry' area after their performance on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Details of the Incident

Television footage captured Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing, along with a coach, holding a large soft toy shaped like a missile. The toy was distinctly labeled 'DF-61'. This 'DF-61' replica refers to a new Chinese-made, land-based intercontinental ballistic missile, reportedly capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which was publicly unveiled at a military parade in September 2025. The toy was among several items thrown onto the ice by spectators following the duo's routine. After being briefly held up, the toy was placed across Xing Jianing's lap.

ISU's Official Response

In an emailed statement to The Associated Press on Sunday, October 26, 2025, the ISU confirmed its awareness of the situation. The statement read, 'The ISU is aware that an inappropriate soft toy seems to have been among those thrown onto the ice by spectators following a performance at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China event on 25 October.' The organization further stated, 'The soft toy was subsequently held by the skaters who had just performed. The ISU regrets the incident and will investigate further.' The ISU also noted that such incidents 'undermine sportsmanship' and could be perceived as 'political provocations at international tournaments.'

Event Context and Performance

The incident occurred during the Cup of China, which took place from October 24 to 26, 2025, at the Chongqing Huaxi Culture and Sports Center in Chongqing, China. Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing finished eighth out of 10 pairs in the ice dance event. The ice dance competition was ultimately won by American duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates.

Absolutely unacceptable. This was a clear political statement, not just a toy.

They knew exactly what that symbol meant. Consequences are necessary.

It's crucial for international sports bodies to address potential political provocations to maintain integrity. Yet, the ISU should also consider the context of cultural differences and whether the dancers truly understood the weight of the 'DF-61' label.

While the incident looks bad and could easily be misinterpreted, we should distinguish between a deliberate political act by the athletes and an impulsive reaction to a fan's gift. A strong warning might be more appropriate than a full-scale investigation for a first offense.

On one hand, sports should ideally remain free from overt political displays to maintain neutrality. On the other hand, a soft toy might not warrant a full-blown investigation unless malicious intent can be clearly proven.
