Tejashwi Yadav to Lead Opposition in Bihar Polls
The opposition INDIA bloc, also known as the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) in Bihar, officially announced Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial candidate for the forthcoming Bihar Assembly elections. The declaration was made on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at a joint press conference in Patna by senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot. This move aims to solidify the alliance's leadership and present a unified challenge to the incumbent National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state.
Alliance Structure and Deputy CM Nominee
The Mahagathbandhan in Bihar comprises several key parties, including the RJD, Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (CPI-ML), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), and Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP). Alongside Tejashwi Yadav's nomination, Mukesh Sahani, chief of the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), was named as a potential deputy chief ministerial face. The alliance also indicated plans for additional deputy chief ministers from various social groups, reflecting Bihar's complex social structure. The announcement follows weeks of internal deliberations and efforts to resolve seat-sharing disagreements among the constituent parties.
Tejashwi Yadav's Political Journey and Pledges
Tejashwi Yadav, born on November 9, 1989, is the youngest son of former Bihar Chief Ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi. A former professional cricketer, he transitioned into politics, becoming an MLA from the Raghopur constituency in 2015. He has served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar on two occasions, from 2015 to 2017 and again from 2022 to 2024. Yadav previously led the Mahagathbandhan as its chief ministerial candidate in the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections. Following his nomination, Yadav pledged to make Bihar 'number one' and promised a 'corruption-free government' if the INDIA bloc comes to power. He also committed to addressing issues of education, healthcare, employment, and governance.
Upcoming Bihar Assembly Elections
The Bihar Legislative Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in two phases, on November 6 and November 11, 2025, to elect the 243 members of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The votes will be counted, and the results declared on November 14, 2025. Despite the unified front presented by the chief ministerial announcement, some internal discord within the INDIA bloc regarding seat-sharing has led to instances where alliance partners will contest against each other in certain constituencies.

This is just about power, not about the welfare of Bihar's diverse population.

His pledges for a 'corruption-free' government are commendable, yet voters will require concrete plans and a strong track record to believe in such ambitious promises.

His past record as DCM wasn't impressive enough for the top job.

Internal discord already? This alliance is doomed to fail.

Having a young leader like Tejashwi is appealing to a segment of the electorate, but his ability to unite all factions and deliver on promises will be under intense scrutiny.
