Chinese Solar Technology Powers Egyptian Irrigation in Key Belt and Road Initiative Project

Clean Energy for Egyptian Agriculture

In a significant stride for clean energy and agricultural development, photovoltaic modules supplied by Chinese solar technology giant LONGi are actively providing substantial and stable clean electricity to water pump irrigation systems across agricultural and pastoral areas in eastern Egypt. This initiative highlights the growing cooperation between China and Egypt under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The project boasts an installed capacity of 500 kilowatts, designed to power essential irrigation infrastructure. This clean energy solution is projected to save over 50,000 yuan ($6,968.4) in electricity costs monthly, thereby effectively reducing agricultural production's operational expenses and contributing to a notable decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.

Expanding Solar Collaboration

The irrigation project is part of a broader landscape of deepening solar energy cooperation between the two nations. During the recent Solar & Storage Live Egypt event, LONGi further solidified its commitment by signing framework agreements for the supply of 50 megawatts of photovoltaic modules with Egyptian distribution partners Egypta Group and Reestech. Following this, LONGi, in collaboration with Huawei, Egypta Group, and Egyptian project owner Mecca, signed a 30-megawatt project cooperation agreement.

Beyond these specific agreements, China and Egypt are engaged in larger-scale solar ventures. China Electric Power Equipment and Technology (CET) is undertaking preliminary studies for a massive 10-gigawatt (GW) solar energy project, primarily located in Upper Egypt. This ambitious project, part of Egypt's 'Green Corridor Initiative,' aims to generate approximately 29,784 GWh of electricity annually, reduce carbon emissions by around 14 million tons, and save over $1 billion in annual natural gas costs. Additionally, China's State Grid is set to invest in two solar projects with a combined capacity of 900 MW, with locations planned for Minya (500 MW) and the Western Desert (400 MW).

Investment in Local Manufacturing

The collaboration also extends to local manufacturing capabilities. Chinese solar PV manufacturer Sunrev Solar has commenced construction of a $200 million vertically integrated solar manufacturing facility in Egypt's Ain Sokhna Industrial Zone, part of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE). The first phase of this project will establish 2 GW manufacturing capacity each for solar cells and modules, with operations anticipated to begin in the first half of 2026. Another Chinese firm, Elite Solar, plans an 8 GW solar manufacturing hub in the SCZONE, with a 2 GW solar cell production line as its initial phase, aiming to position Egypt as a key photovoltaic manufacturing hub in the region.

Belt and Road Initiative as a Catalyst

This extensive cooperation in the solar sector is a direct reflection of the high-quality collaboration fostered under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative. The BRI aligns with Egypt's 2030 Vision for comprehensive development, particularly in upgrading infrastructure and energy sectors. High-level discussions, such as those between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, have consistently emphasized strengthening BRI cooperation in areas including new energy, trade, and technology.

So much foreign control over critical infrastructure. Where is Egypt's sovereignty?

While the investment in clean energy is crucial for Egypt's development, the sheer scale of Chinese involvement raises concerns about long-term economic independence. It's a balancing act between progress and potential foreign influence.

Another example of China's economic expansionism masked as aid. Be wary, Egypt.

The Belt and Road Initiative clearly facilitates large-scale infrastructure development, which Egypt needs. But critics are right to question the transparency of agreements and the potential for increased national debt that can accompany such massive foreign investment.

Establishing local manufacturing facilities is a good step towards job creation and technology transfer. Yet, Egypt needs to ensure these are true partnerships that foster indigenous innovation, not just assembly plants for foreign tech.
