Brazil's First Lady Announces Aid Package

Brazil has pledged to send urgent humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, an initiative announced by First Lady Janja Lula da Silva on Friday, October 17. The declaration was made during her address at the closing session of the World Food Forum in Rome, Italy. The aid package is set to include essential items such as food, medicine, and other necessities, aiming to alleviate the severe humanitarian crisis in the region.

During her speech, Janja Lula da Silva highlighted the critical situation in Gaza, emphasizing that 'war against hunger' is paramount. She pointed to the devastating impact of severe malnutrition, particularly on children, and criticized the international community's perceived slow response to the escalating crisis.

Context of Brazil's Stance on Gaza

Brazil, under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has maintained a consistent and vocal stance regarding the conflict in Gaza. The nation has frequently condemned the violence, with President Lula da Silva describing Israel's actions as 'premeditated genocide' and drawing comparisons to the Holocaust. This strong diplomatic position has positioned Brazil as a leading voice among Global South nations advocating for accountability and justice in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Brazilian diplomacy has actively pushed for a ceasefire, the establishment of humanitarian corridors, and a two-state solution. The country has also explicitly condemned the use of hunger as a weapon of war and called for independent investigations into attacks on civilians.

Previous Humanitarian Efforts and Delivery

This is not Brazil's first humanitarian intervention in Gaza. The country has previously dispatched aid, demonstrating a sustained commitment to assisting the affected population. Past efforts include:

• In October 2023, a VC-2 aircraft from the Brazilian Presidency delivered 1.5 tons of food, comprising rice, sugar, corn products, and milk, to Egypt for onward transport to Gaza.
• Also in October 2023, Brazil sent water filtration equipment (40 purifiers capable of treating over 220,000 liters of water daily) and two health kits, each designed to serve up to 3,000 people for a month, containing medicines and supplies.
• Earlier, in January 2009, a Brazilian Air Force plane transported 14 tons of food and medicine to the region.

Humanitarian aid from Brazil is typically delivered to Egypt, where it is then transferred to responsible authorities, such as the Red Crescent, for distribution within the Gaza Strip.

As First Lady, Janja Lula da Silva represented Brazil at the World Food Forum, an annual United Nations gathering focused on global food security. The 2025 forum marked the 80th anniversary of the FAO and aimed to discuss strategies for transforming food systems and combating global hunger.
