China's Vice Premier Urges Global Cooperation for Green Transition at CCICED Meeting

Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang Addresses CCICED Annual General Meeting

Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the chairperson of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), delivered a significant address on Thursday, October 16, 2025, in Beijing. Speaking at the 2025 annual general meeting of the CCICED, Vice Premier Ding called for concerted international efforts to advance global green development and foster a clean, beautiful world.

Call for Enhanced International Collaboration

In his remarks, Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang underscored China's readiness to collaborate with all parties to achieve these environmental goals. He emphasized several key areas for international cooperation:

  • Upholding multilateralism and strengthening dialogue and exchange.
  • Coordinating environmental protection with economic development.
  • Increasing financial, technological, and capacity-building support to developing countries.
  • Injecting new impetus into global green development through scientific and technological innovation.

He stressed that 'Chinese modernization is the modernization of harmony between humanity and nature,' highlighting China's commitment to an eco-friendly development path.

China's Progress in Green Development

Vice Premier Ding also highlighted China's substantial progress in environmental protection and its role in global ecological governance. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China has made significant strides in improving its ecological environment and building a 'beautiful China.' The nation remains steadfast in pursuing green and low-carbon development and promoting green productivity tailored to local conditions. China's efforts are aimed at contributing more 'wisdom and strength' to the development of its ecological civilization and advancing global sustainable development.

CCICED's Role and International Recognition

The CCICED, established in 1992, functions as a high-level, non-profit, international advisory body that provides policy recommendations to the Chinese government on environment and development. Its annual general meetings serve as a crucial platform for cooperation and policy development among Chinese and international experts. The 2025 meeting, themed 'Promoting the Green Transformation for a Harmonious Coexistence Between Humans and Nature,' explored various policy studies and their recommendations.

International experts and UN officials present at the meeting praised China's leadership in advancing green and low-carbon transformation. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Undersecretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, noted that 'China's leadership and experience provide not only inspiration, but also practical pathways for cooperation.' Inger Andersen, Undersecretary-General of the UN and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, highlighted China's leading role in renewable energy development.

Talks about green transition while building new coal plants. Hypocrisy.

Acknowledging China's strides in renewable energy is fair, yet their continued reliance on fossil fuels for rapid growth presents a significant paradox that needs addressing.

Green transition is essential, and China's role is undeniable. However, developed nations also need to significantly increase their support for developing countries, not just China.

It's good that China is discussing green development, but genuine progress requires more than just words; specific, measurable commitments from all major economies are crucial.
