Trump Claims India Will Cease Russian Oil Purchases Following Modi Assurance

Trump's Announcement from the White House

Former United States President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him India would cease its purchases of oil from Russia. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump characterized this as 'a big step' in the ongoing efforts to economically isolate Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine.

Trump indicated that he had previously expressed dissatisfaction with India's continued oil imports from Russia, which Washington believes help fund Russia's war efforts. He further added that the process for India to halt these shipments would not be immediate, describing it as 'a little bit of a process, but that process will be over soon.'

India's Stance and Economic Context

Prior to the February 2022 Ukraine war, India imported less than 1% of its oil from Russia. However, this figure has surged dramatically, reaching approximately 40% of its total crude oil imports, or about 1.62 million barrels per day in September, making Russia India's top oil supplier. This increase is largely attributed to the discounted prices offered by Russia as Western nations imposed sanctions and reduced their own purchases.

Despite Trump's announcement, the Indian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding Modi's alleged commitment. India has historically defended its purchases of Russian oil, with officials asserting that these imports are crucial for the nation's energy security and economic stability.

Tariffs and Future Implications

The announcement comes months after Trump imposed tariffs on Indian exports to the U.S., ostensibly as a measure to discourage India's Russian oil imports. In August, Trump had raised tariffs on Indian exports to the United States to 50 percent, with his aides accusing India of fueling Russia's war in Ukraine.

Trump also expressed his intention to pursue similar commitments from China, stating, 'Now we're going to get China to do the same thing.' A potential cessation of Russian oil imports by India would mark a significant shift in global energy diplomacy and could reshape the calculus for other nations still importing Russian crude.

While reducing Russia's war funding is a noble goal, it's unclear if India can truly afford to abandon such a significant and discounted energy source without severe economic repercussions for its citizens. The Indian embassy's silence is telling.

Interfering with sovereign nations' trade decisions is pure overreach.

Finally, some real action! This is exactly what we need to isolate Russia.

Effective diplomacy by Trump. Getting results where it counts.

India's reliance on discounted Russian oil is a clear economic decision, benefiting its massive population and industry. However, continuing to fund a nation engaged in a conflict like Ukraine's war certainly raises ethical questions that can't be ignored.
