Prominent Environmental Journalist Attacked in Istanbul
Hakan Tosun, a 50-year-old Turkish journalist and environmental activist, is fighting for his life in intensive care after being brutally assaulted in Istanbul. Tosun, known for his independent documentaries on environmental issues, urban development, and social protests, was found unconscious and severely beaten in the Esenyurt district late Friday evening, October 10, 2025. He was subsequently admitted to İstanbul's Çam Sakura Hospital in the Başakşehir district, where he was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage and remains in critical condition.
Suspected Targeted Attack Linked to Reporting
Tosun's family and colleagues strongly suspect the assault was a targeted attack directly related to his work as an environmental journalist. His sister, Öznur Tosun, stated that the information she received from doctors led her to believe the assault 'was not a mugging but an attempted murder.' Tosun had been reported missing by his family after they lost contact with him on Friday. His identity was confirmed through fingerprints due to the severity of his injuries and his unconscious state.
Investigation Underway, Suspects Arrested
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Attorney Hakan Bozyurt of the Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD), speaking outside the hospital, announced that they had been informed of the arrest of two suspects in connection with the attack. The association plans to formally request access to all evidence, including witness testimonies and security camera footage, to ensure a thorough investigation.

Protecting journalists is paramount, and his environmental documentaries are vital, but it's important to avoid speculation and wait for concrete evidence regarding the perpetrators' intentions.
