Dramatic Rescue Operation Unfolds Off Jamaica's South Coast
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Coast Guard conducted a dramatic rescue operation on October 10, 2025, saving 16 fishermen from a burning vessel off the south coast of Jamaica. The incident, which occurred approximately 14 nautical miles south of Portland Point, Clarendon, also saw one crew member tragically presumed dead.
HMJS Norman Manley Responds to Distress
Reports indicate that just before midday, the JDF Coast Guard vessel HMJS Norman Manley spotted the fishing vessel engulfed in flames. The Norman Manley was immediately rigged as a fireboat to combat the blaze while simultaneously deploying a small rescue craft to search for survivors in the vicinity. The rescue team located 16 men clinging to three small canoes nearby. These rescued individuals were brought aboard the patrol vessel, provided with hydration, and subsequently transported to the mainland for medical attention.
Crew Composition and Search Efforts
The crew of the ill-fated vessel consisted of nine Dominican nationals and eight Jamaican nationals. They had reportedly departed from Harbour View, St Andrew, with their destination being the Pedro Banks when the disaster struck. Sadly, a 17th crew member is believed to have drowned during the ordeal, and authorities are continuing to search for any signs of the missing individual.
Public Urged to Remain Vigilant
The JDF has urged the public and mariners operating along the south coast to remain vigilant for any signs of missing persons or debris related to the incident. They are requested to report any sightings immediately to the Jamaica Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Kingston. The JRCC Kingston operates 24 hours a day and coordinates all maritime and aeronautical search and rescue efforts within Jamaican waters.

One person still lost. This is a tragedy.

It's a relief to see such an effective rescue operation by the HMJS Norman Manley, saving almost an entire crew. Still, the underlying causes of the fire and the ultimate fate of the missing person remain pressing concerns.

Another reminder of the dangers at sea. More needs to be done.

Why did their boat catch fire? Safety standards must be poor.

The JDF did an outstanding job under pressure, showing their capabilities in maritime rescue. Yet, the presence of so many foreign nationals raises questions about licensing and oversight of fishing operations in our waters.
