Official Launch Marks New Era of Saudi-French Cultural Cooperation
Villa Hegra, the inaugural joint Saudi-French cultural foundation, officially opened its doors in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, on October 2, 2025. The landmark institution is set to function as an international platform dedicated to fostering dialogue, creativity, and cultural exchange. The inauguration ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials from both nations, underscoring the strategic importance of this collaboration.
A Strategic Partnership for Global Cultural Exchange
The establishment of Villa Hegra is a direct outcome of a strategic partnership between the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) and the French Agency for AlUla Development (AFALULA). This initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to position AlUla as a global hub for arts, culture, and sustainable tourism. The foundation's origins trace back to a 2018 intergovernmental agreement between Saudi Arabia and France, with further foundational agreements in 2021 and a Royal Decree on December 4, 2024.
The collaboration seeks to deepen bilateral cultural ties, provide access to world-class artistic resources for local communities, and establish a model for international cultural cooperation in the Arab world.
Vision, Programs, and State-of-the-Art Facilities
Villa Hegra is envisioned as a vibrant center for contemporary culture, offering a diverse range of programs and facilities. Its mission is to invigorate AlUla's artistic scene and establish it as a global arts destination. The institution's offerings include:
- Artist residencies jointly led by Saudi and French artists.
- Creative workshops for children and teenagers.
- Exhibitions, theater, and film screenings.
- Music performances and cross-cultural programs.
- Collaborations with prestigious French institutions such as the Philharmonie de Paris.
The newly renovated headquarters boasts modern facilities, including an exhibition hall, dedicated artist studios, educational spaces, the region's first performing arts studio, and AlUla's first indoor cinema. Feriel Fodil serves as the CEO of Villa Hegra, with Gaël Charbau and Basmah Felemban as the Saudi-French artistic director duo.
Distinguished Inauguration Ceremony
The official inauguration was presided over by Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al-Saud, Saudi Minister of Culture, Governor of the Royal Commission for AlUla, and Chairman of the Villa Hegra Foundation. He was joined by French Culture Minister Rachida Dati and French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot. The ceremony brought together prominent officials and cultural leaders from both Saudi Arabia and France, highlighting the shared commitment to this cultural endeavor.
Villa Hegra is also set to join the prestigious international 'Viva Villa' network, which includes renowned institutions like Villa Medici in Rome and Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto, further solidifying its global standing.

Seems like a lavish project to attract tourists, not genuine cultural development.

While it's great to see investment in cultural infrastructure, I hope the programs genuinely empower local Saudi talent rather than just importing foreign styles. Sustainability for local artists is key.

Collaborations with prestigious French institutions can elevate the artistic standard, but it's important to ensure that Saudi cultural identity is celebrated and not overshadowed by foreign influences. A true blend is what's needed.

Fantastic news! Cultural exchange is vital for global understanding and peace.

Will this truly benefit local Saudi artists, or just be a showcase for Western art?

Just another attempt at 'culture washing' for Saudi Arabia's image. Don't be fooled.
