Liechtenstein Prepares for Schengen Entry/Exit System Implementation on October 12

New Digital Border System to Launch

The Principality of Liechtenstein, a non-European Union member state within the Schengen Area, is preparing for the phased implementation of the new Entry/Exit System (EES), set to commence on October 12, 2025. This automated border control system will introduce significant changes for third-country nationals traveling to the 29 European countries that are part of the Schengen zone.

The EES aims to modernize border management by replacing the traditional manual stamping of passports with a digital record of entries and exits. Its primary objectives include enhancing security, preventing irregular migration, detecting overstayers, and combating identity fraud.

Biometric Data Collection Becomes Mandatory

Under the new system, non-EU nationals, including those from Liechtenstein's fellow European Free Trade Association (EFTA) members Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland, will be required to provide biometric data upon their first entry into the Schengen Area. This data will include facial images and fingerprints.

This information, along with personal data from travel documents such as name, date of birth, and nationality, as well as the date and place of entry and exit, will be digitally registered. The EES will store this data for three years, with the retention period renewing upon each subsequent border crossing.

Phased Rollout and Operational Details

The implementation of the EES will be gradual, rolling out over a six-month period. While the system officially begins on October 12, 2025, full operationality across all external border crossing points is anticipated by April 10, 2026. During this transitional phase, some border points may not immediately collect biometric data, and manual passport stamping may continue alongside EES registration.

Travelers making their initial entry under the EES will register their biometrics at automated kiosks or border control booths. For subsequent visits, facial recognition technology is expected to streamline the process. Authorities have advised travelers to anticipate potentially longer waiting times during the initial rollout due to the new procedures.

Liechtenstein's Role in Schengen

Liechtenstein became a full member of the Schengen Area on December 19, 2011, following the signing of a Schengen association agreement with the European Union on February 28, 2008. As a non-EU country integrated into the Schengen system, it adheres to the common border rules and policies, making the EES directly applicable to its external borders. The EES is designed to apply to all non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays, defined as up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

This is a massive privacy invasion. Too much data collection for simple travel.

This system aims to prevent irregular migration, which is valid, but the increased friction at borders might negatively impact legitimate tourism, a key economic driver for many regions.

Modernizing border controls is necessary in today's world, but the potential for technical glitches during the transition period could create chaos and frustrate international travelers.

The move towards digital efficiency is a positive step, but the phased rollout and anticipated longer waiting times could significantly deter tourists in the initial stages.

Modernizing borders is essential. Good for Liechtenstein leading the way.
