Portugal to Open New Tourism Office in Buenos Aires in 2026

Portugal Expands Tourism Reach in Argentina

Portugal is poised to enhance its tourism presence in Argentina with the upcoming opening of a new tourism office in Buenos Aires. Scheduled to commence operations in 2026, the office will be located within the Portuguese Embassy in Buenos Aires, situated at Maipú 942. This strategic move aims to foster greater collaboration and significantly increase the influx of Argentine visitors to Portugal.

The decision to establish this new outpost, which will mark Portugal's 26th country of presence for a tourism office, was announced at the conclusion of the Latin American International Tourism Fair (FIT). Portugal served as the guest of honor at the fair, held in Buenos Aires from September 27th to 30th.

Strategic Objectives and Key Figures

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the State Secretariat for Tourism and Turismo de Portugal. Its primary goal is to strengthen ties between Portugal's tourism sector and Argentina's travel industry, promoting Portugal's diverse cultural and natural attractions.

Lídia Monteiro, director of the Board of Directors of Turismo de Portugal, emphasized the importance of this direct presence, stating that the office will 'work closely with tourism operations, but also with end consumers.' Gonçalo Teles Gomes, Portugal's Ambassador to Argentina, highlighted that having a dedicated representative would 'open doors that will be very important for our work,' reinforcing the promotion of Portuguese tourism.

Boosting Visitor Numbers and Future Plans

Argentina is recognized as a promising emerging market in Latin America for European destinations. Portugal aims to substantially increase the number of Argentine tourists, from approximately 75,000 annually to 100,000 by the end of 2026. Ambitious projections target 200,000 visitors by 2029, with a long-term vision of reaching one million Argentine tourists within a decade.

To achieve these goals, the new office will undertake various activities, including:

  • Intensifying marketing efforts and raising awareness of Portugal's offerings.
  • Providing training sessions for Argentine travel agents.
  • Organizing missions for Argentine tour operators and travel agencies to visit Portugal in January 2026, following the Madrid International Tourism Fair (FITUR).
These efforts are designed to provide local industry professionals with valuable insights and resources, fostering a deeper understanding of Portugal's attractions and facilitating stronger partnerships.

Establishing a direct presence in Argentina is a clever way to tap into a new market, but the article doesn't mention how Portugal plans to manage the carbon footprint associated with a massive increase in long-haul flights. Environmental considerations must be part of the strategy.

Is this really a good use of resources? Seems excessive for an embassy.

This will definitely put Portugal on many more travel itineraries. Great news!

While this initiative promises significant economic benefits for Portugal, there's a risk of gentrification and increased living costs for locals in popular tourist areas. The government should consider measures to mitigate these potential negative social impacts.

Another tourism office? Just means more crowded destinations.
