Yellow Weather Warnings Issued for Eastern Iceland as Strong Storm Approaches

Warnings in Effect for Eastfjords and Southeast Iceland

The Icelandic Met Office (Veðurstofa Íslands) has issued yellow weather warnings for Eastfjords and Southeast Iceland, as a strong storm with high winds is expected to impact the regions overnight from Thursday, October 3, 2025, into Friday. The warning, which is valid until October 5, 2025, 00:00, signals potentially hazardous conditions for residents and travellers alike.

Expected Wind Speeds and Conditions

The approaching storm, influenced by a low-pressure system named 'Amy' nearing Iceland, is forecast to bring significant northwesterly winds. Wind speeds are anticipated to range between 18 to 25 metres per second (m/s) in the affected areas. However, local gusts could be considerably stronger, reaching up to 35 to 45 m/s in specific locations, particularly in the southern fjords of the Eastfjords and east of Öræfi. On the main road east of Jökulsárlón and towards Neskaupstaður, gusts of up to 35-40 m/s are expected, mainly from early morning until noon on Friday. The worst of the storm is predicted to last through much of Friday, with calmer weather expected by Saturday evening.

Safety Precautions and Travel Advice

Authorities are urging residents and motorists in the affected regions to take necessary precautions. The Icelandic Met Office has highlighted the risk of 'hazardous driving conditions for vehicles sensitive to winds.' Specific advice includes:

  • Securing outdoor items to prevent damage or injury.
  • Motorists, especially those operating high-sided or lightweight vehicles, are strongly advised to avoid travel if possible due to potentially dangerous road conditions.
  • Residents and travellers should monitor official forecasts and updates from the Icelandic Met Office.

This warning comes as Iceland enters its stormy season, and meteorologists continue to advise the public to stay informed about evolving weather patterns.

On one hand, the Met Office is doing its job by alerting everyone to potential dangers, which is commendable. On the other hand, it highlights how much more volatile our weather has become, possibly due to broader climate changes.

It's good that the Met Office is providing these warnings, especially with the increasingly unpredictable weather patterns we're seeing globally. Still, many residents are well-equipped to handle these conditions.

While it's important to be cautious, these warnings can sometimes feel a bit excessive for seasoned Icelandic drivers. However, for tourists, they are absolutely vital.
