Ireland Welcomes Gazan Students Amidst Humanitarian Crisis
Ireland has successfully completed a complex humanitarian operation, evacuating and enrolling over 60 Gazan students into its higher education system. This initiative marks a leading effort among European nations to provide academic opportunities and safe haven for students affected by the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The students have begun their studies at various Irish institutions, receiving comprehensive support to integrate into their new academic and social environments.
A Complex Diplomatic and Logistical Undertaking
The evacuation process was a multi-faceted diplomatic and logistical challenge, spearheaded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and involving Irish embassies in the region. The operation required securing permissions from Israeli authorities for students to exit Gaza, followed by transit through Israel, Jordan, and Türkiye before reaching Dublin. The students arrived in several groups, with initial arrivals in late August and September 2025. Upon arrival in Dublin, the students underwent medical assessments to address any health concerns, including potential malnutrition, before proceeding to their host universities.
Extensive Academic and Welfare Support
A consortium of 11 Irish universities played a pivotal role in this initiative, led by Trinity College Dublin. These institutions have collectively waived tuition fees for the Gazan students and secured substantial funding from independent non-governmental sources, including university foundations and anonymous donors, to support their stay. The participating universities include:
- Trinity College Dublin
- South East Technological University
- University College Dublin
- University of Limerick
- Mary Immaculate College
- University of Galway
- Maynooth University
- Atlantic Technological University
- Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
- TU Dublin
- Dublin City University
Beyond academic placements, the students are receiving a 'wrap-around approach' of support, encompassing counselling, pastoral care, and financial assistance, recognizing the significant trauma they have experienced. Tánaiste Simon Harris welcomed the students, stating, 'It's really important we find practical ways in which we can support people in Gaza and one of those ways is enabling some students to come from Gaza and study in Irish universities.'
Ireland's Broader Stance on the Gaza Crisis
This humanitarian effort aligns with Ireland's consistent advocacy for the people of Gaza. The Irish government has been an outspoken critic of the ongoing conflict, repeatedly calling for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and unimpeded, large-scale humanitarian aid access to Gaza. The Department of Foreign Affairs has supported over 200 people to leave Gaza and travel to Ireland since the beginning of the crisis. The initiative underscores Ireland's commitment to providing tangible support and demonstrating solidarity with those affected by the humanitarian situation.

Focus on the root cause, not just evacuating a few. What about those left behind?
