Third Measles Case Identified in Reunion
Santé Publique France has confirmed a third autochthonous case of measles on the French overseas department of Reunion. This announcement, made as part of a broader epidemiological update on September 12, 2025, highlights ongoing concerns regarding the circulation of the highly contagious virus within the territory and across metropolitan France.
National Measles Situation in 2025
The case in Reunion is part of a wider resurgence of measles observed throughout France in 2025. As of August 31, 2025, a total of 828 measles cases have been reported across the country since the beginning of the year, with 23 new cases identified in August alone. While the overall increase in cases has shown a decreasing trend since May, the virus has affected 70 departments, representing 69% of France's administrative divisions. Reunion is specifically noted among the overseas territories with reported cases.
Impact and Vaccination Status
The current measles outbreak has led to significant health impacts. Of the reported cases in France, 289 individuals (35%) required hospitalization, with 12 cases admitted to intensive care. Furthermore, 111 cases (13%) presented with complications, including 65 instances of pneumonia and 1 case of encephalitis. Tragically, two deaths have been linked to measles during this period. The median age of those affected is 16.6 years, with children aged 1-4 years (15%), adults aged 40 and over (14%), and young people aged 15-19 years (12%) being the most affected age groups. Data on vaccination status reveals that among individuals for whom this information was known, 65% were either unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated, underscoring the critical role of immunization in preventing severe outcomes.
Public Health Response and Vigilance
The identification of a third autochthonous case in Reunion emphasizes the need for continued public health vigilance and robust vaccination efforts. Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease, and maintaining high vaccination coverage is crucial to prevent its spread and protect vulnerable populations. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge individuals to ensure their vaccination status is up-to-date, particularly in light of the ongoing viral circulation.

Why are cases still rising despite vaccination efforts? Something isn't adding up.

Reunion? Sounds like an excuse to push more jabs.

The data on unvaccinated individuals is stark, emphasizing vaccine importance. However, a blanket approach might overlook specific population needs or valid concerns that some people genuinely have.
