Flash Flooding Transforms Xlendi Roads into Rivers Following Intense Storm in Gozo

Intense Storm Batters Gozo, Xlendi Hardest Hit

The Maltese islands were struck by an intense storm on the evening of September 24, 2025, leading to significant flash flooding, particularly in the Gozitan village of Xlendi. Heavy rainfall and lightning accompanied the storm, which saw roads in Xlendi rapidly transform into raging rivers, making them impassable for vehicles and pedestrians alike.

Reports from local residents, including Ramona Mercieca who shared visual evidence, depicted scenes of cars partly submerged in the floodwaters. The deluge was so powerful that some vehicles were reportedly dragged by the floodwaters. Beyond Xlendi, other localities in Gozo, such as Victoria and Marsalforn, also experienced flooding.

Emergency Response and Weather Details

In response to the widespread flooding, the Civil Protection Department (CPD) deployed up to six crews to assist residents, primarily those affected in their homes. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported as a direct result of the storm, and the situation was brought under control.

The Maltese Islands Weather website noted that three storm cells developed, bringing cooler air into a direct clash with humid air, resulting in the unexpected intensity of the rainfall. Between 30 mm and 50 mm of rain were registered across Gozo, significantly more than in Malta.

Environmental Impact and Recurring Issue

The heavy runoff from the storm led to the temporary closure of Xlendi Bay to swimming. The Water Services Corporation (WSC) clarified that the brown coloration observed in the bay's waters was due to stormwater runoff carrying silt and debris, not sewage contamination.

Xlendi, nestled in a valley, is historically prone to flooding during heavy storms, a recurring issue that funnels water directly into the seaside village. This geographical characteristic often leads to significant runoff and disruption for residents and businesses.

Why are we still building in flood-prone valleys without proper mitigation? This is ridiculous.

While the quick response from CPD is commendable, the fact that Xlendi is 'historically prone' to this type of event suggests a deeper need for long-term flood prevention strategies, especially with changing climate patterns.

The article paints a vivid picture. Important to document these extreme weather events.

Calling it a 'recurring issue' isn't enough. This is a failure of infrastructure planning.

The clash of air masses clearly caused an extreme weather event, but the consistent vulnerability of Xlendi suggests that geographical factors are exacerbated by insufficient planning. More sustainable solutions are needed to protect residents and businesses from these predictable deluges.
