Birgu Man Arraigned for Fatal Shooting
Salvu Mangion, a 70-year-old resident of Birgu (Vittoriosa), has been formally charged with the murder of Kyle Mifsud, 33, following a fatal shooting incident. The arraignment took place on Tuesday, where Mangion pleaded not guilty to the charges. The victim, Mifsud, who resided in Cospicua, was shot in the abdomen on Sunday afternoon and later died from his injuries at Mater Dei Hospital.
Police Inspector Stephen Gulia testified in court that officers found Mifsud bleeding in a common staircase at a housing estate in Triq il-Qalb ta' Ġesu, Birgu. Mifsud, despite his critical condition, reportedly identified his neighbour, Salvu Mangion, as the shooter. Mangion was arrested shortly after the incident, having fled the scene, and police also recovered a hunting rifle believed to be the weapon used.
Details of the Incident and Court Proceedings
The shooting occurred on Sunday, September 21, 2025, following an argument between the two men. During the court proceedings, Mangion's defence lawyers, Franco Debono and Adreana Zammit, highlighted that Mifsud had previously been convicted of breaking into Mangion's home and stealing items two years prior, a fact confirmed by the prosecution.
Mangion faces charges of:
- Murder
- Shooting a firearm in an inhabited place
- Illegal possession of a firearm
Community Impact
The incident has drawn significant attention in the local community of Birgu, a historic town in Malta. The tragic death of Kyle Mifsud marks a somber event for the area, and the ongoing legal proceedings against Salvu Mangion are expected to continue as the case unfolds.

Finally, an elderly person standing up for themselves. This is what happens when you push people too far!

This was not self-defense. It was a cold-blooded act after an argument.

Taking the law into your own hands leads to chaos. He deserves to be charged.

The system failed Salvu before; he had to take matters into his own hands.

Murder is murder. No amount of past history justifies taking a life.
