Grand Opening Set for October 29
The highly anticipated Cactus shopping centre in Esch-Lallange, Luxembourg, is scheduled to officially open on October 29. This significant retail development represents an investment of €150 million and is poised to become a major hub for residents in the south of the country. The complex is located at the crossroads of Boulevard Grande-Duchesse-Charlotte and Route de Mondercange.
Extensive Retail and Service Offerings
The new centre will feature a substantial 7,000m² Cactus supermarket, making it the third largest Cactus in Luxembourg, following La Belle Étoile and Bascharage. Beyond the supermarket, the facility will house a shopping arcade with 15 additional stores, offering a diverse range of products and services. Confirmed tenants include well-known brands such as:
- Cocottes
- Oberweis
- CK Fitness
- Medi-Market
- Ferber hair&style
- 5àSec
- K Kiosk
- Acuitis
- Mister Minit
- Black & White
- TGL Travel Luxembourg
- Frups
- Lucky Bar
Community Integration and Economic Impact
Designed as a multifunctional centre, the development extends beyond retail. It will provide 800 parking spaces for customer convenience. Additionally, the site will host offices for the Hëllef Doheem foundation and an 'Enfant Roi' crèche, integrating essential community services. The project is projected to generate more than 150 direct and indirect jobs, with 50 positions specifically within the Cactus supermarket.
A Vision for Esch-Lallange's Future
The opening marks the culmination of a long-term project, with construction commencing in spring 2020 and experiencing delays due to various factors including judicial procedures, project redesigns, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The development also incorporates 67 apartments intended for rental. Laurent Schonckert, Director General of the Cactus group, emphasized the project's broader vision, stating, 'We are proud to support the development of the city and to create a meeting point for all generations.' He further described it as 'a place that meets today's needs and is built for the Esch of tomorrow.'

€150 million for more consumption? What about real community projects?

While the new jobs and convenience are a plus, I worry about the increased traffic and strain on local infrastructure in Esch-Lallange. It's a double-edged sword.

Another giant chain crushing small local shops. Sad to see.

More traffic and congestion, just what we needed.

The promise of a meeting point for all generations sounds appealing, and the variety of stores is decent. Yet, I wonder if a large shopping center truly fosters genuine community spirit compared to more organic local initiatives.
