Ottawa Hosts 18th Canada Army Run, Drawing Over 15,000 Participants

Thousands Rally for Canadian Armed Forces in Ottawa

Ottawa recently served as the vibrant host for the 18th edition of the Canada Army Run, an annual event that unites Canadians and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in a spirit of camaraderie and community. Held on Sunday, September 21, 2025, the event saw over 15,000 participants gather in the nation's capital, with some reports indicating more than 16,000 sign-ups both in-person and virtually.

The Canada Army Run, presented by BMO, is more than just a race; it is a significant opportunity for Canadians to express gratitude to past and present CAF members and to raise crucial funds for two official charitable causes: Support Our Troops and Soldier On. These organizations provide essential assistance to ill and injured military members, veterans, and their families.

A Race Steeped in Tradition and Purpose

The event weekend, which ran from Friday, September 19, to Sunday, September 21, included activities such as the Canadian Tire Race Expo and the BMO Kids' Zone.

Participants had the option to engage in various challenges, including:

  • 5K race
  • 10K race
  • Half Marathon
  • Sergeant Major's Challenge (combining the 5K and 10K)
  • Commander's Challenge (combining the 5K and Half Marathon)
Virtual races were also available, extending participation throughout the month until September 26.

The races commenced with a ceremonial cannon fire at Cartier Square Drill Hall, a unique military tradition. Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, Commander of the Canadian Army, and Chief Warrant Officer Christopher Robin, the Army Sergeant Major, led the countdown to the start. The routes wound through scenic parts of Ottawa, passing national landmarks such as Parliament Hill and Rideau Hall, and concluding at the National War Memorial, where uniformed CAF members presented participants with distinctive 'dog tag' medals.

Significant Impact on Military Community Support

The 18th Canada Army Run is expected to have raised over $400,000 for Support Our Troops and Soldier On. Since its inception in 2008, the event has collectively contributed more than $5.5 million to these vital programs, underscoring its long-standing commitment to the military community. The funds directly support initiatives ranging from family services to rehabilitation and adaptive sports for ill and injured service members and veterans.

Organizers expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, highlighting the event's role in fostering a strong connection between the military and the broader Canadian community.

Another corporate branding exercise disguised as charity. BMO gets free advertising.

The Army Run clearly fosters community spirit and offers a chance to show gratitude, but it's crucial that these events don't overshadow the need for robust government policies and ongoing support for veterans.

Why do we need a run? Just donate directly if you actually care about veterans.

All this fanfare for $400k? Seems like a lot of effort for minimal direct impact.

Running through Ottawa's landmarks is certainly an appealing aspect for participants. Still, the primary focus should always remain on the beneficiaries, ensuring the event's purpose isn't diluted by its entertainment value.
