Honduras' state power company, Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica (ENEE), has officially launched a significant US$60 million project aimed at revamping the Cañaveral-Río Lindo hydro complex. This crucial initiative seeks to modernize the facility and increase its electricity generation capacity, reinforcing the nation's renewable energy infrastructure.
Project Scope and Capacity Expansion
The overhaul targets an increase in the complex's installed capacity from its current 109MW to an enhanced 129MW, representing a 20MW boost. The comprehensive work plan includes several key upgrades:
- Installation of new turbine impellers
- Replacement of existing generators
- Implementation of an automated SCADA system for improved control and efficiency
The project is being carried out by Hitachi Mitsubishi Hydro (HM Hydro), a specialized firm in hydroelectric solutions. The Cañaveral-Río Lindo complex, located in the Cortés region approximately 130 km northeast of Tegucigalpa, is strategically vital for Honduras' energy supply. It operates in a cascade system, utilizing Lake Yojoa as a natural reservoir. The Cañaveral plant holds historical significance as Honduras' first hydroelectric power station, with construction commencing in 1960.

The substantial US$60 million investment for this overhaul is being supported by the government of Japan, highlighting international cooperation in advancing Honduras' energy sector.
