Chișinău Celebrates Cultural Diversity at 24th Festival of Ethnicities

Chișinău Embraces 'Unity in Diversity'

Chișinău, the capital of Moldova, marked a vibrant celebration of its diverse cultural landscape on September 21, 2025, with the 24th edition of the Festival of Ethnicities. Held under the theme 'Unity in Diversity', the event brought together numerous ethnic communities to showcase their unique traditions and foster intercultural dialogue. The festival took place in the 'Stefan cel Mare' Public Garden, drawing hundreds of participants and visitors.

President Sandu Highlights Importance of Unity

President Maia Sandu attended the festival, delivering a message that underscored the significance of unity and mutual respect among Moldova's diverse population. 'The Festival shows us how beautiful and strong the Republic of Moldova is when each community contributes,' President Sandu stated. She further emphasized that 'peace starts in our hearts' and is essential for building anything lasting. The President also highlighted the value of preserving the languages spoken by ethnic communities, including Ukrainian, Russian, Gagauz, and Bulgarian, as part of Moldova's richness.

A Showcase of Traditions and Intercultural Dialogue

Organized by the Agency for Interethnic Relations and the Chișinău City Hall, in partnership with the Coordinating Council of Ethnocultural Organizations, the festival aimed to harness the traditions of national minorities and strengthen friendly relations. Attendees had the opportunity to explore a variety of cultural expressions:

  • 20 ethnic courtyards, each presenting the distinct values and ethnocultural specificity of different communities.
  • A craft objects expo-market, featuring traditional artisanal works.
  • A Lectorium area dedicated to learning about other cultures and promoting peaceful coexistence.

The event served as a platform for communities such as Bulgarians, Gagauzians, Jews, Ukrainians, Romani, Russians, Armenians, and Azeris to share their languages, dances, songs, cuisines, and crafts, which President Sandu noted have become an integral part of the common Moldovan identity.

Promoting Peace and Mutual Respect

President Sandu's address also touched upon the broader context of peace and stability, particularly in light of regional events. She reiterated that Moldova stands firmly on the side of peace and that mutual respect extends to the languages spoken by all communities. The festival, through its vibrant displays and inclusive atmosphere, reinforced the message that Moldova's strength lies in its ability to embrace and celebrate its rich ethnic tapestry.

All talk about unity, but does it address the deep divisions in society?

It's encouraging to see communities share their cultures and President Sandu speak of peace. However, given the regional tensions, one hopes this spirit can genuinely permeate political actions and not just remain symbolic.

Just a PR stunt by the government. Real issues of discrimination remain.
