Indonesian Army Chief Affirms Transparent, Inclusive, and Free Recruitment Process

New Era for Army Recruitment

Indonesia's Army Chief of Staff (KSAD) General Maruli Simanjuntak announced that the recruitment process for Army personnel (TNI AD) is now characterized by transparency, inclusivity, and is entirely free of charge. The statement, made during the TNI Fair 2025 in Jakarta, signals a significant reform aimed at ensuring a fair and equitable entry into the military service.

Eliminating Fees and Connections

General Simanjuntak directly addressed long-standing public perceptions, stating, 'People used to think they needed connections or money to join the Army. But today, anyone can apply without paying a fee.' This commitment seeks to dismantle informal barriers that may have previously hindered qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds. The Army is actively working to improve the quality of its selection process, emphasizing that merit will be the sole determinant for entry.

Public Complaint Channels for Accountability

To uphold the integrity of the new recruitment policy, the Indonesian Army has established public complaint channels. These channels, accessible via phone and messaging applications, are designed to allow individuals to report any potential misconduct or violations encountered during the recruitment process. General Simanjuntak encouraged public participation, noting, 'We encourage the public to report violations. This helps ensure a fair and open selection.' This mechanism underscores the Army's dedication to accountability and maintaining a transparent selection environment.

Showcasing Commitment at TNI Fair 2025

The announcement coincided with the TNI Fair 2025, a two-day event held from September 20-21, 2025, at Jakarta's National Monument (Monas). The fair, which supports the 80th anniversary of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), featured exhibitions of military equipment and dedicated recruitment and educational booths. The presence of these booths allowed prospective recruits and the public to directly engage with Army representatives and learn more about the reformed process, drawing considerable public enthusiasm.

While the commitment to free recruitment is positive, ensuring that public complaint channels are genuinely effective and acted upon is paramount for trust.

They're just saying this to look good. The system is rigged.

A transparent recruitment process is a strong step forward for the Army's image. Still, the challenge lies in convincing a skeptical public that old habits truly have been eradicated.

What about accountability for past corruption? This doesn't address the root issues.
