President Xi Jinping has emphasized the crucial role of rural teachers in fostering young individuals who are well-prepared morally and intellectually to support the nation’s socialist objectives. In a message ahead of the 41st Teachers' Day, he expressed gratitude to educators for their commitment to rural education and encouraged them to continuously enhance their skills and dedication in nurturing future generations.
In his letter to eight rural teachers involved in a special-post recruitment initiative, Xi recognized the selfless efforts these educators have made in their communities. He underscored the mission and responsibility teachers carry and urged them to maintain their original purpose, showing care and guidance to their students for their overall development.
Premier Li Qiang supported this initiative, instructing educators to fully engage in instilling virtues and holistic development in students, especially in regions that require educational resources the most. The special-post teacher recruitment program, initiated in 2006, has successfully brought in over 1.18 million teachers to bolster rural primary and middle schools across central and western China.
The program not only aims to recruit educators but also focuses on sustainable teaching conditions through policies that include financial support and housing. Recent statistics show that a substantial majority of rural teachers now hold at least a bachelor's degree, indicating a significant improvement in educational qualifications.
One notable example is Liu Xiantao, a teacher from Zunyi province, who has committed to teaching in a senior high school serving students in less privileged areas. Liu's decision is rooted in his own upbringing and education, realizing the transformative power of teaching early in life thanks to a compassionate teacher.
Despite initial attractions of urban life, Liu found fulfillment in teaching after gaining experience in rural schools, discovering his true calling amidst challenges. His current school represents hope for many students who struggle academically, and he cherishes the daily rewards of the teaching profession, from student achievements to heartfelt thanks from parents.
For his birthday this year, Liu expressed a deep wish to improve as an educator and to see his students succeed, reflecting his dedication to their future success.

The focus on 'socialist objectives' in education is concerning. Shouldn't the goal be critical thinking and creativity instead?

How about addressing the systemic problems in rural education instead of just glorifying teachers? It's not sufficient!
