A witness to the shooting of Charlie Kirk on Wednesday, Raydon DeChene, stated that the conservative activist was in the midst of a debate about mass shootings and gun violence when the gunshot struck him in the neck. DeChene was present at Kirk's event at Utah Valley University, near the "Prove Me Wrong" tent where Kirk engaged students in discussions about his political and cultural viewpoints.
DeChene described being close to the front when she saw Kirk grab his neck. She reported seeing blood and his eyes rolling back. She then heard a single gunshot and everyone dropped to the ground, followed by instructions to evacuate. Other witnesses also reported that Kirk was about to address a question about gun violence when the shooting occurred.
Prior to the shooting, DeChene mentioned that the crowd was enjoying the atmosphere and chanting Kirk's name. The event was part of Turning Point USA's "The American Comeback Tour." The UVU Chief of Police, Jeffrey Long, stated that over 3,000 people were in attendance, with six university officers present, along with some plainclothes officers and Kirk's security team.
Witnesses, including DeChene, noted the absence of significant security measures, such as metal detectors. Jordan Last, who arrived at the event around noon, reported seeing some security but was able to walk past them. He was preparing to challenge Kirk when he heard a loud gunshot. Max Stanley, a pitcher for the university's baseball team, witnessed Kirk's body falling and assisted in helping people evacuate.
Following the shooting, President Trump confirmed Kirk's death on social media. Conflicting information emerged during a news conference regarding the investigation. Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated a person of interest was in custody, while Utah Commissioner of Public Safety Beau Mason said the suspect was still at large. Authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have it, and they do not believe a second person was involved. Elected officials from both sides of the political spectrum condemned the attack and acts of political violence. President Trump ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Kirk's honor.

Regardless of your political leanings, violence is unacceptable. This is a low point for our society.

We are losing our sanity as a country if we are using gunfire as a response to differing political beliefs.
