Chinese Embassy in South Korea Issues Weapon Caution to Citizens

The Chinese Embassy in South Korea issued a notice on Monday, advising Chinese citizens in or traveling to South Korea to exercise caution regarding the possession of offensive weapons. The embassy's statement, released on its WeChat account, highlighted recent changes to South Korean law concerning the carrying of such items.

The revised criminal act now includes the act of carrying a deadly weapon in public places as a specific offense. The embassy explained that, under the new regulations, carrying and displaying potentially dangerous weapons in public areas without a legitimate reason could lead to serious penalties. This includes items that could cause injury or death, such as knives or hammers, if their presence causes fear or anxiety among others.

The penalties for violating this law can be severe, potentially resulting in imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to 10 million won. The embassy noted that several individuals, including foreigners, have already been investigated for violations since the law came into effect.

In light of these legal changes, the Chinese Embassy strongly advises Chinese citizens in South Korea and those planning to visit to avoid carrying items that could be considered offensive weapons in public. If carrying such items is unavoidable, the embassy stressed the importance of keeping them properly concealed to prevent exposure and minimize legal risks.

If South Korea wants to protect its citizens, it should do so with common sense, not overly harsh legislation.

Good to know! I’d rather avoid a hefty fine than risk carrying something that could be misconstrued.

The South Korean government should focus on actual crime instead of targeting harmless items.

This is an overreaction! Are they really going to imprison people for carrying everyday tools?

The more explicitly laws are communicated, the better! This is a step in the right direction.
