Iga Swiatek, the Wimbledon champion from Poland, advanced to the third round of the National Bank Open on Wednesday. She secured a comfortable victory against China's Guo Hanyu with a score of 6-3, 6-1.
Swiatek, seeded second in the tournament, showcased her skills by hitting four aces and successfully converting six break points out of eight opportunities. The match concluded in 72 minutes.
In doubles, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Quebec, along with her sister Bianca Jolie, faced a defeat. They lost to the top-seeded Italian pair of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Fernandez, who had recently won the D.C. Open, had hoped for an evening match to allow more recovery time. However, she played in the afternoon and lost in straight sets to Australia’s Maya Joint in the singles competition.
Kayla Cross from London, Ontario, and Victoria Mboko of Toronto were defeated by Jiang Xinhu of China and Chan Hao-Ching of Taiwan with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (0).
The second-seeded duo of Ottawa's Gabriel Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand were set to compete against Americans Sofia Kenin and Caroline Dolehide.
The National Bank Open, a WTA 1000-level tournament, introduced a new format this year. The event now spans 12 days and features 96 players. The top 32 seeds were granted byes to the second round.
