Navy Pilot Safe After F-35C Fighter Jet Crash in California

A U.S. Navy pilot is safe following the crash of an F-35C fighter jet near Naval Air Station Lemoore in Southern California. The incident resulted in a fiery crash, prompting a response from CAL Fire.

The aviation incident occurred on the operational side of the installation around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The jet crashed in a field near the intersection of South Dickenson Avenue and West Cadillac Ave, igniting a fire.

The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft and is safe. No other personnel were affected by the crash.

The crash resulted in a small grass fire that covered approximately ten acres. The fire was fully contained by 8:32 p.m. local time.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown.

Naval Air Station Lemoore, the Navy's largest Master Jet Base, is home to numerous squadrons involved in both training and operational activities. The F-35C involved in the crash was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 125 "Rough Raiders," a specialized training unit.

NAS Lemoore is the only Navy base that houses the F-35 Lightning II. The base also houses a significant portion of the Navy's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet aircraft. The base is located in Fresno County.
