In the week ending Sunday, Japan witnessed a record number of heatstroke cases requiring ambulance transport. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported 10,804 individuals were taken to hospitals. This represents a new high for the year.
This figure significantly exceeded the previous week's total of 5,309. The surge in cases coincided with a heat wave that brought temperatures to 35 degrees Celsius and higher across numerous regions of the country.
Tokyo recorded the highest number of heatstroke sufferers, with 1,099 cases. Saitama followed with 750 cases. Hokkaido experienced a substantial increase, with the number of cases rising 2.8-fold to reach 690.
The agency is urging the public to utilize air conditioning and fans without reservation. They are also emphasizing the importance of staying adequately hydrated to mitigate the risks associated with the extreme heat.
