A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice
The Royal Canadian Legion has officially designated Maureen Anderson as the 2024 National Silver Cross Mother. This prestigious honor is bestowed annually upon a mother who has lost a child in the line of duty while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. Anderson, a veteran herself, will serve as a representative for all Canadian mothers who have experienced the loss of a child in military service.
Remembering Sub-Lieutenant Abbigail Cowbrough
The appointment honors the memory of Anderson's daughter, Sub-Lieutenant Abbigail Cowbrough. In April 2020, Sub-Lieutenant Cowbrough was one of six Canadian Armed Forces members who tragically lost their lives when their CH-148 Cyclone helicopter crashed into the Ionian Sea during a training exercise off the coast of Greece. The incident remains a significant moment of mourning for the Canadian military community.
Role in Remembrance
As the National Silver Cross Mother, Anderson will participate in several commemorative events leading up to and including Remembrance Day. Her primary duty will be to place a wreath at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on behalf of all mothers who have lost children in military service. Regarding her selection, the Royal Canadian Legion noted that her dual perspective as both a veteran and a grieving mother provides a profound connection to the sacrifices made by service members and their families.
About the Silver Cross Mother
The tradition of the National Silver Cross Mother dates back to 1936. The recipient is chosen by the Royal Canadian Legion to serve for a one-year term. During this time, she acts as a symbol of the nation's gratitude and respect for the families of the fallen. As Anderson stated in recent reflections, 'It is an honor to represent the mothers who have endured the ultimate sacrifice, ensuring that the memory of our loved ones remains a guiding light for the country.'
