Return of Migrants to Dhaka
A total of 174 Bangladeshi nationals arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka after being repatriated from Libya. These individuals had been living in difficult conditions, with many having been detained by Libyan authorities after being intercepted at sea while attempting to reach Europe through irregular migration routes.
Facilitation and Support
The repatriation process was a collaborative effort involving the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli. Officials confirmed that the returnees were provided with necessary travel documentation and logistical support to ensure their safe passage back to Bangladesh. Upon arrival, the returnees were processed by immigration authorities and received assistance from government agencies to facilitate their reintegration.
Context of Irregular Migration
Libya remains a primary transit point for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe. Many Bangladeshi nationals fall victim to human trafficking networks, often facing exploitation and detention. The Bangladesh government, in coordination with international partners, continues to work on identifying and repatriating citizens who are stranded in Libyan detention centers. A government official stated, 'Our priority is to ensure the safe return of our citizens and to raise awareness about the extreme dangers associated with irregular migration routes.'
Ongoing Reintegration Efforts
The government of Bangladesh, alongside various non-governmental organizations, provides support to returnees, including counseling and information on legal migration pathways. This latest group of 174 individuals joins hundreds of others who have been brought back to the country over the past year as part of ongoing diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives to address the crisis of irregular migration.
