Men's World Cup Super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen Canceled Due to Fog, Rescheduled for Courchevel

Race Called Off in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The men's World Cup Super-G ski race, originally slated to take place on Sunday, March 1, 2026, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, was officially canceled. Persistent fog and significantly reduced visibility on the challenging Kandahar course made it impossible to ensure the safety of the competitors.

Organizers, in conjunction with the International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS), made multiple attempts to proceed with the event. These efforts included delaying the start time and even lowering the start gate in hopes of finding a clear window. However, the weather conditions, characterized by low clouds and dense fog, did not improve sufficiently, leading to the ultimate decision to call off the race.

Rescheduling Confirmed for Courchevel, France

Following the cancellation, Markus Waldner, the FIS men's race director, confirmed that the Super-G event has been rescheduled. The race will now be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, in Courchevel, France.

Courchevel is a familiar venue on the World Cup circuit and is set to host the last weekend of speed races before the World Cup Finals, which will take place in Norway the following week.

Impact on the Super-G Standings

This cancellation marks the first men's World Cup Super-G to be called off since the Milano-Cortina Olympics.

The current Super-G season standings see Marco Odermatt of Switzerland holding a commanding lead with 425 points. He is 158 points ahead of his closest competitor, Vincent Kriechmayr of Austria, with three Super-G races remaining in the season, including the newly rescheduled event in Courchevel.

One must appreciate the commitment to athlete safety, yet these frequent cancellations are tough on the sport's viewership. Maybe more flexible contingency plans are needed.

Odermatt's lead is strong, so this cancellation likely won't change the overall outcome much. However, it's still disruptive for the competitors vying for lower positions.

While safety is definitely the top priority, it's a shame for the fans and athletes who prepared for this weekend. Hopefully, Courchevel provides better conditions.

Another race canceled due to weather? This is getting ridiculous.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen always seems to have bad luck with fog. Find a better venue!
