The Principality of Monaco is preparing to host the
13th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge from
July 8 to 11, 2026. Organized by the
Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM), this international event will bring together
43 teams from
21 nations, transforming the famous Monte Carlo marina into a dynamic testing ground for zero-emission propulsion and autonomous navigation technologies.
A Hub for Sustainable Maritime Innovation
The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge serves as an 'outdoor laboratory of innovation' dedicated to accelerating the energy transition within the yachting and broader maritime sectors. The event's core mission is to promote and encourage university-led innovations, fostering collaboration between engineering students, researchers, marine engineers, and industry professionals. Supported by key partners including the
Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation,
UBS,
BMW, and
SBM Offshore, the Challenge emphasizes real-world experimentation and the open-source sharing of solutions.
Diverse Categories and Cutting-Edge Technologies
Participants will compete across four distinct categories, each designed to push the boundaries of sustainable marine technology:
- AI Class: Introduced in 2025, this class features 11 teams focused on developing artificial intelligence for autonomous navigation and intelligent systems in boats.
- Energy Class: A long-standing pillar of the event, this category includes 26 teams tasked with integrating innovative electric and hybrid propulsion solutions into a standard catamaran hull provided by the YCM.
- SeaLab Class: Comprising 6 teams, this class acts as a floating laboratory for advanced experimentation with emerging energy sources, including green methanol and liquid hydrogen.
- Open Sea Class: This category showcases CE-certified zero-emission prototypes from the industry, highlighting market-ready sustainable solutions.
For the 2026 edition, registered prototypes include
33 featuring battery-electric systems,
nine incorporating hydrogen technologies,
one utilizing methanol, and
nine employing foils.
Beyond the Races: Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange
Beyond the on-water competitions, which include races designed to test endurance, speed, and maneuverability, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge fosters a rich environment for knowledge exchange. The event features 'Tech Talks' where teams present their projects to an international jury, a Corporate Mentoring Programme, and a Job Forum connecting young talent with yachting companies. Conferences on alternative fuels and advanced technologies further contribute to the collective effort towards a greener maritime future.
A Legacy of Innovation
The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge traces its origins back to the historic powerboat meetings held in Monaco in
1904, which marked the first international powerboat contest. The modern iteration of the event was launched in
2014 as 'Solar One,' initially focusing on solar-powered boats. Since then, it has continuously evolved, introducing the Energy Class in
2018 and the AI Class in
2025, solidifying Monaco's commitment to pioneering sustainable solutions in the nautical world.

Monaco? Luxury boats and 'sustainability' feels like pure greenwashing to me.

The historical link to 1904 powerboat races is interesting, showing a long tradition of innovation. However, we must ensure these modern solutions are accessible globally, not just within the wealthy yachting community, to truly address climate change.

Another event funded by big corporations. Is it truly independent research or just marketing?

Hydrogen and methanol are still experimental. We need proven solutions NOW, not future promises.

Finally, some real action in maritime! This is exactly what we need for a greener future.
