Massive Recall Impacts Canadian Ford Owners
Ford Motor Company has announced a significant recall in Canada, affecting 590,191 vehicles due to a software issue that could compromise trailer safety. The defect, stemming from a glitch in the Integrated Trailer Module (ITM), may lead to the failure of trailer brakes and exterior lights, posing an increased risk of accidents.
The recall extends to several popular models, including certain 2021–2026 F-150 trucks, 2022–2026 Super Duty trucks, 2024–2026 Ranger pickups, and 2022–2026 Maverick vehicles.
Software Glitch Detailed
The core of the problem lies in a software malfunction that can cause the trailer to lose communication with the tow vehicle, typically during start-up. When this occurs, a trailer's stop lamps and turn signals may not illuminate, and in some instances, the trailer's braking function can be lost. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted that 'trailer lights or brakes that do not function can reduce the driver's ability to control the trailer,' thereby increasing crash risk.
Drivers of affected vehicles may receive an early warning through a 'Trailer Brake Module Fault' message displayed on the instrument cluster, accompanied by a rapidly flashing turn signal indicator. Ford has stated it is aware of 407 incidents potentially related to this defect, though no crashes or injuries have been reported in connection with the issue.
Remedy and Rollout Timeline
To address the software flaw, Ford will deploy an over-the-air (OTA) software update to the affected vehicles. Owners will also have the option to receive the fix via mobile service or by visiting a Ford dealership.
The automaker anticipates that the update will be available for most models starting March 17, with a full rollout to all affected vehicles expected by May. This Canadian recall is part of a larger action by Ford, which includes approximately 4.3 million vehicles in the United States facing the same software issue.

Safety first! Glad they're addressing this quickly before any incidents.

Proactive recall and clear communication. That's how it should be done.

Trailer brakes failing? That's a serious safety hazard! Unacceptable.

It's reassuring that Ford is providing multiple avenues for the fix, including mobile service, which is a nice touch. Still, customers shouldn't have to deal with critical safety recalls on relatively new vehicles, especially for such a basic function as trailer lights and brakes.

This is why I stick to older, simpler vehicles. Too much tech, too many problems.
