Lithuania Finalizes Major JLTV Acquisition
Lithuania has officially completed the delivery of its full fleet of 500 American-made Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs), with the final two units arriving on February 18, 2026. This milestone marks the culmination of a significant modernization effort for the Lithuanian Armed Forces, deepening defense ties with the United States.
The acquisition project began in 2019 with an initial contract for 200 JLTVs. An additional contract for 300 vehicles was signed in October 2022 between the Lithuanian Defence Materiel Agency, under the Ministry of National Defence, and the U.S. Government.
Enhanced Mobility and Protection
Manufactured by Oshkosh Defense, the JLTVs are advanced all-terrain armored vehicles designed to provide high mobility and enhanced protection in complex combat environments. They are built to withstand threats such as small arms fire, improvised explosive device (IED) blasts, and artillery fragments. The vehicles are equipped with 12.7 mm M2 QCB machine guns, and some variants will serve as platforms for the RBS70 NG short-range air defense system, which Lithuania ordered in July 2024.
Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas emphasized that the completion of the JLTV fleet marks a 'strategic stage of capability enhancement' for the Lithuanian Armed Forces, supporting the development of the national division and deterrence. The vehicles are intended to improve the military's mobility, personnel protection, and overall combat power.
Strategic Deployment and NATO Interoperability
The newly acquired JLTVs will be assigned to key units within the Lithuanian Armed Forces, including the 'Iron Wolf' and 'Griffin' Brigades, as well as the national Rapid Response Force. This strategic deployment aims to bolster Lithuania's ability to contribute to the security of NATO's eastern flank and enhance interoperability with allied forces.
The procurement, executed through a government-to-government acquisition model with the U.S., underscores Lithuania's commitment to strengthening its defense posture and investing in the collective security of the Alliance.

Are these American vehicles truly the best, or just politically convenient?

The strategic importance of bolstering NATO's eastern flank is undeniable, yet I wonder if this heavy reliance on foreign military hardware truly builds long-term national self-sufficiency.

Just more war profiteering. Our taxes should go to people, not tanks.
