Denmark Activates First Battery Train Charging Facilities on Skjern–Holstebro Line

Denmark Advances Green Rail with New Charging Infrastructure

Denmark has taken a significant stride towards sustainable public transport as Banedanmark, the country's railway infrastructure administrator, officially put the first charging facilities for battery-powered trains into service on the Skjern–Holstebro line. This pivotal development enables the full operation of battery trains, replacing the diesel railcars that previously served the route and marking the first section of the national network to be operated with this eco-friendly technology.

The introduction of these facilities is a crucial component of Denmark's broader strategy to achieve emission-free state rail traffic, aligning with the ambitious 'Infrastrukturplan 2035'.

Innovative Charging Technology Deployed

To support the new battery train operations, Banedanmark has installed two distinct charging facilities at Skjern and Holstebro stations, designed to test different technical solutions. At Holstebro, a charging rail has been implemented, while Skjern features a catenary system specifically for charging. Both facilities operate at 25,000 V, allowing trains to recharge sufficiently for their next journey segment in just 7 to 8 minutes while stopped at the station. Kasper Skovbro-Hansen, project manager for charging infrastructure at Banedanmark, noted the complexity of introducing such new technology into an established railway network.

Siemens Mireo Plus B Trains Lead the Way

The trains utilizing this new infrastructure are Siemens Mireo Plus B units, acquired by regional operator Midtjyske Jernbaner. A total of seven trains were purchased, which are deployed on both the Skjern–Holstebro state line and the Vemb–Lemvig–Thyborøn regional line. These two-car trainsets offer seating for up to 127 passengers, can reach a top speed of 140 km/h, and boast a battery-powered range of approximately 80 kilometers. They feature a battery-hybrid drive, capable of charging via overhead lines in electrified sections and running on batteries on non-electrified routes, ensuring CO2-emission-free and low-noise operation.

Environmental Impact and National Vision

The 67-kilometer section between Skjern and Holstebro is now Denmark's first state line to operate without direct emissions, a significant environmental benefit. This transition is expected to eliminate approximately 1,900 tons of CO2 annually that were previously generated by diesel trains on this route. The project is a key part of the national infrastructure plan 'Infrastrukturplan 2035', which aims to make all state-owned rail traffic in Denmark emission-free. Jette Aagaard, program director at Banedanmark, highlighted this as an important step in the green transformation of the Danish railway system. The infrastructure between Skjern and Holstebro underwent renewal in the summer of 2025 to accommodate the heavier battery trains.

The official inauguration of Denmark's first battery-powered trains was celebrated on December 19, 2025, with the attendance of H.M. King Frederik, marking a historic milestone for the country's green transition.
