High-Level Talks Bolster Bilateral Ties
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, concluded a significant visit to Budapest, Hungary, on February 11, 2026. During his visit, Wang Yi held discussions with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, reaffirming both nations' commitment to deepening their 'all-round cooperation' and 'all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership'. This visit marked Wang Yi's first European stop of the year, underscoring the importance China places on its relationship with Hungary.
Economic Cooperation and Investment at the Forefront
A central theme of the discussions was the robust economic relationship between China and Hungary. Hungarian officials highlighted that China has been the largest source of foreign investment in Hungary for the past three consecutive years, including 2025. Prime Minister Orbán emphasized that Chinese investments are expected to significantly contribute to Hungary's economic success in the coming years. Key areas of investment include modern industries, with Chinese companies like BYD and CATL slated to begin production in Hungary this year, positioning the country as a leader in Europe's new electric vehicle industry. Foreign Minister Szijjártó noted that Chinese companies bring 'ultramodern technology' and create 'highly advanced jobs' in Hungary.
Strategic Partnership and International Role
The visit also served to review the progress of the comprehensive strategic partnership established during President Xi Jinping's 2024 visit to Hungary. Wang Yi conveyed greetings from Chinese leaders to Prime Minister Orbán, stressing that despite a complex international situation, the friendship and cooperation between China and Hungary remain steadfast. China expressed its appreciation for Hungary's long-standing friendly policy and its active promotion of bilateral cooperation. Wang Yi reiterated China's support for Hungary in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and development interests, and its opposition to external interference in Hungary's internal affairs. Both nations also affirmed their shared membership in the 'Friends of Peace' group within the United Nations, with Hungary acknowledging China's peace efforts, particularly concerning the situation in Ukraine.
Enhanced Connectivity and Future Prospects
Further strengthening bilateral ties, an agreement was reached to significantly increase air connectivity between the two countries. The number of weekly flights connecting Budapest with major Chinese cities is set to rise from the current 42 to 77, comprising 35 passenger flights and 42 cargo flights. Additionally, progress on the Budapest-Belgrade railway line was noted, with freight traffic scheduled to commence on February 27 and passenger service on March 14. China also encouraged Hungary to play an 'active role' in fostering the stable development of China-European Union relations.

This deepens China's influence in Europe, undermining EU solidarity. A dangerous path.

Finally, a country making independent decisions for its own prosperity, not bowing to external pressure.

Those 'advanced jobs' are often just a Trojan horse for economic dependency and control.

The creation of new jobs and modern industries is a definite boost to Hungary's economy. However, the long-term environmental and social impacts of these large-scale foreign investments must be thoroughly scrutinized to avoid unintended consequences.
