Carolinas Lead National Population Surge
New data from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals that North Carolina and South Carolina have become leading destinations for population growth across the United States. Between July 1, 2023, and July 1, 2024, North Carolina attracted the most new residents from other states, while South Carolina registered the highest percentage growth rate nationwide. This trend underscores a continuing demographic shift towards the Southern region of the country.
North Carolina's Significant Influx of New Residents
North Carolina experienced a substantial increase in its population, adding approximately 164,800 people during the 2023-2024 period. This numeric growth positioned North Carolina as the fourth highest in the nation, following Texas, Florida, and California. The state's population now exceeds 11 million. A key driver of this expansion was net domestic migration, with 82,288 individuals moving to North Carolina from other U.S. states, making it the second-highest state for net domestic migration, only behind Texas.
Reports indicate that a significant portion of this influx, particularly in 2023, was driven by younger demographics, with Millennials accounting for over 30,900 new residents and Generation Z adding another 22,250. Factors such as affordability and lower housing costs, especially compared to states like Florida and New York, are cited as primary motivations for relocation to North Carolina.
South Carolina Records Nation's Fastest Growth Rate
South Carolina recorded the highest percentage of population growth in the United States between July 2023 and July 2024, with a rate of 1.7 percent. During this period, the state welcomed approximately 91,000 new residents, bringing its total population to nearly 5.48 million. Domestic migration played a crucial role in this growth, contributing nearly 68,000 individuals who relocated from other parts of the U.S. This made South Carolina the third largest recipient of domestic migrants, trailing only Texas and North Carolina.
Broader Trends in U.S. Population Movement
The robust growth in both Carolinas reflects a broader national trend where the Southern U.S. continues to be the fastest-growing and largest-gaining region in the country. Migration, particularly from other states, remains a dominant factor in the population changes observed across these states, often outweighing natural population increase (births minus deaths). The appeal of states like North and South Carolina is often linked to a combination of economic opportunities, quality of life, and relative affordability.

Losing local charm and community feel. This growth is unsustainable and detrimental.

The draw of economic opportunities is clear, and it's good for state economies. Yet, this rapid expansion often leads to increased cost of living and can displace long-term residents who can no longer afford their communities.
