Inter-institutional Operation Leads to Discovery
An inter-institutional operation in the Mezcalapa–Ocuilapa region of Chiapas, Mexico, culminated on Friday, February 7, 2026, with the dismantling of a fortified bunker used by a criminal group. The action resulted in the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of significant illicit materials.
According to Óscar Alberto Aparicio Avendaño, the Secretary of Public Security (SSP), the operation was part of a 'robust and permanent' deployment in the localities of Ocuilapa and El Carrizal. The discovery was a result of intelligence work and recent arrests in the area, allowing authorities to identify and intervene in the property.
Bunker's Strategic Design and Seized Evidence
The dismantled bunker was described as a sophisticated and fortified structure, featuring armored doors, secret passages, and strategically placed positions for surveillance and attack. Authorities stated that its design confirmed its use as an installation intended to resist security operations and facilitate various criminal activities.
During the intervention, security forces secured a range of evidence, including:
- A stolen vehicle
- One long weapon found within the bunker
- Videovigilance equipment
- Documentation related to illicit collections
- Diverse evidence linked to high-impact crimes such as kidnapping, drug trafficking, and extortion
Arrests and Impact on Criminal Group
The four individuals arrested in connection with the bunker's operations were apprehended throughout the week as part of the ongoing security efforts. Among those detained was the operational arm of the criminal group's leader in the region. Additionally, four more long weapons and another stolen vehicle were seized from these arrested individuals.
Secretary Aparicio Avendaño emphasized that these actions have significantly weakened the operational and logistical capacity of the criminal cell operating in the region. The bunker itself functioned as a central hub for criminal operations, allegedly housing kidnapped individuals and coordinating illicit activities. The seized evidence is expected to strengthen ongoing investigations and aid in identifying other potential members of the criminal organization.

One less criminal stronghold. Hope this sends a strong message.

It's good that these criminals are off the streets and their hub is destroyed, which will disrupt their local operations. But without addressing the demand for drugs and the economic desperation that drives recruitment, new cells will likely emerge.

They always claim 'significant weakening.' It's just a temporary setback for them.
