Indian seaplane operator Mehair has announced a significant step towards sustainable regional air connectivity, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with U.S. start-up Tidal Flight at the Singapore Airshow 2026. The agreement, finalized on February 4, 2026, includes five firm orders and five options for Tidal Flight's new hybrid-electric Polaris aircraft.
The Singapore Airshow, a biennial aerospace event, is being held from February 3 to 8, 2026, at the Changi Exhibition Centre, serving as a global platform for aerospace and defense innovation.
Introducing the Polaris Hybrid-Electric Seaplane
The Polaris is a 9- to 12-passenger, high-wing, hybrid-electric amphibious aircraft under development by Virginia-based Tidal Flight. This innovative aircraft is designed to operate from both water and traditional runways, offering versatility for regional travel. Tidal Flight aims for the Polaris to achieve its first flight in 2028, with commercial service entry projected for 2030. The aircraft is expected to have a list price of approximately $6 million and boasts an impressive range of up to 1,000 nautical miles. A key feature of the Polaris is its commitment to sustainability, promising an 85% reduction in fuel burn and a 40% reduction in direct operating costs compared to conventional seaplanes.
Mehair's Vision for Indian Regional Connectivity
Mumbai-based Mehair, an operator since 2011, plans to deploy the Polaris aircraft to establish new air services connecting remote communities across India's coastline, inland waterways, and islands. The company has been awarded 92 seaplane routes through the Indian government's UDAN regional connectivity program, highlighting its role in expanding access to underserved areas. While Mehair had previously suspended seaplane operations during the Covid-19 pandemic, it is preparing to resume flights in April from the Andaman Islands using leased amphibious Cessna 208 Caravans. This order for the Polaris aircraft aligns with Mehair's broader strategy to embrace sustainable aviation solutions, having previously shown interest in other advanced aircraft types.
Tidal Flight: A Pioneer in Sustainable Coastal Transportation
Founded in 2023, Tidal Flight is a U.S. start-up dedicated to advancing sustainable and affordable coastal transportation. The company's co-founder and chief executive, Jude Augustine, emphasizes the potential of seaplanes to provide direct, low-infrastructure access to various destinations. Tidal Flight has already secured $4 million in seed funding and a $1.25 million U.S. Air Force contract, demonstrating confidence in its innovative approach. The company is actively building a full-scale powertrain and 'iron bird' for ground testing, with a full-scale prototype flight targeted for 2028. The agreement with Mehair is part of a growing interest in the Polaris, which has garnered 12 purchase agreements potentially covering 150 orders globally.
