Andorra Hosts Inaugural FIS Freeride World Championships in Historic First

Historic Debut in Ordino Arcalís

The Principality of Andorra is making history this week as its Ordino Arcalís resort hosts the inaugural FIS Freeride World Championships. Scheduled within a weather window from February 1 to 6, 2026, the main competition day is officially confirmed for Tuesday, February 3. This event represents a pivotal moment for the sport, being the first official Freeride World Championships sanctioned by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS).

The championship brings together 66 elite riders from 17 nations, all vying for the prestigious title of FIS Freeride World Champion. The competition will feature four distinct categories: Ski Men, Ski Women, Snowboard Men, and Snowboard Women.

The Road to Recognition

The establishment of the FIS Freeride World Championships is a culmination of efforts to integrate freeride disciplines into the broader framework of international winter sports. The groundwork was laid in 2022 when FIS acquired the Freeride World Tour, subsequently recognizing freeride as an official discipline. This championship is widely regarded as a crucial step towards the sport's potential inclusion in future Winter Olympic Games.

The event's significance extends beyond crowning individual champions; it also features a Nations Ranking, introducing a medal-based team competition that rewards collective performance. Points are awarded to the top five finishers in each category, contributing to a Medal Standing that will determine the overall top-performing nation.

Challenging Terrain and Optimal Conditions

Competitors will test their skills on the renowned Basser Negre face at 2,687 meters in Ordino Arcalís. This challenging venue boasts a vertical drop of 470 meters, a northeast orientation, and an average slope angle of 36 degrees, reaching a maximum of 47 degrees. The face is characterized by three distinct technical zones, offering diverse line options including sheer drops, exposed sections, and demanding transitions.

Recent days have seen exceptional snow conditions in the area, with up to 150 centimeters of fresh snowfall across Ordino Arcalís, providing an ideal stage for the championship. Athletes will have a single decisive run to showcase their control, creativity, and style to an expert jury.

Event Kick-off

The championship officially commenced with an opening ceremony held on Friday, January 30, at 6:30 pm, at the illa Carlemany Shopping Centre. The ceremony included an official parade of the participating riders, live music, and an autograph session, allowing fans to meet some of the world's best freeriders before the competition.

A true milestone! Can't wait to see the world champions crowned on that epic Basser Negre face.

While it's great to see freeride gain mainstream recognition and potentially Olympic status, I worry about over-regulation and losing the core, rebellious spirit of the sport.

Nations ranking feels so forced. Freeride is an individual expression, not a team sport.

FIS involvement will just sanitize freeride. It's losing its soul to commercialism.
