Consumer Sentiment Declines Further
Consumer confidence in the Netherlands deteriorated in January 2026, with the indicator falling to -23. This marks a decrease from -21 recorded in December 2025, according to data released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The current sentiment remains considerably below its long-term average of -11 over the past two decades.
Key Factors Behind the Decline
The downturn in consumer confidence is primarily attributed to a deepening pessimism about the overall economic climate. The economic climate component of the indicator saw a notable drop from -35 in December to -40 in January. Consumers expressed increased negativity regarding both the economic outlook for the next twelve months and their perception of the economy over the previous twelve months.
Furthermore, the willingness of Dutch consumers to make purchases also saw a decline. This sub-indicator fell to -12 in January, down from -11 in December. Consumers were also more negative about the prospect of making large purchases. While their views on their financial situation over the previous twelve months were slightly less negative, their outlook for their personal financial situation in the coming twelve months became less positive.
Historical Context of Consumer Confidence
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has been monitoring consumer confidence monthly since April 1986. The indicator's all-time high was 36, recorded in January 2000, while its lowest point was -59, observed in September and October 2022. The current reading of -23 highlights a sustained period of subdued consumer sentiment in the Netherlands, remaining well below historical averages.

Honestly, I'm doing fine. This seems overblown.
