Formal Accusation at the UN
The Islamic Republic of Iran has formally lodged a complaint with the United Nations Security Council, accusing the United States and Israel of actively instigating and interfering in its ongoing domestic protests. The accusation was delivered in a letter by Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, around January 9-10, 2026.
In his communication, Iravani condemned what he described as the 'ongoing, unlawful, and irresponsible conduct' of the United States, asserting that these actions were carried out 'in coordination with the Israeli regime.' He further stated that this interference involved 'threats, incitement, and the deliberate encouragement of instability and violence' within Iran.
Allegations of Destabilization and Violence
Iran's envoy specifically blamed Washington for 'destabilizing practices' that, according to Tehran, undermine the foundational UN Charter, violate fundamental principles of international law, and pose a threat to international peace and security. The accusation also held the United States responsible for 'transforming peaceful protests into violent, subversive acts and widespread vandalism.'
Beyond the UN, other Iranian officials have echoed these sentiments. Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, claimed that the involvement of the United States and the 'Israeli entity' was evident in the protest landscape. Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has also previously accused protesters of acting on behalf of foreign interests.
Context of Ongoing Protests
The accusations come amidst a period of sustained unrest in Iran. While the specific triggers for recent demonstrations vary, they have included grievances over economic conditions and broader anti-government sentiment. These protests have been ongoing, with some reports linking them to the larger movement that began in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini. Iranian authorities have consistently attributed the unrest to foreign interference, particularly from the United States and Israel, alleging their efforts to fuel instability.

Pure fiction. The Iranian people are demanding change from within, not being told what to do by external forces.

Another day, another ridiculous accusation from Tehran. Address your own internal problems, Iran!

This is just a desperate attempt to deflect from their abysmal human rights record and economic failures. Nobody believes this propaganda.

Of course, they're inciting protests. It's their playbook to undermine sovereign nations.

While foreign interference can exacerbate tensions, the initial spark and sustained momentum of the protests largely stem from internal socioeconomic and political frustrations. Iran should focus on engaging with its citizens rather than solely pointing fingers abroad.

While it's plausible foreign actors might try to exploit existing unrest, it's crucial not to dismiss the genuine grievances of the Iranian people. The primary drivers for these protests are internal.
