On January 8, 2026, the Icelandic Minister of Health, Alma Möller, announced the approval of nearly ISK 80 million in grants aimed at bolstering rural healthcare facilities across the country. This substantial investment is designated for equipment renewal, with a significant portion allocated to ensuring robust backup power solutions for institutions located outside the capital area. The initiative seeks to strengthen essential services and mitigate the impact of potential power disruptions in these vital regions.

Focus on Emergency Preparedness and Equipment Renewal

A key component of the approved funding is the allocation of ISK 32 million specifically for the procurement and installation of backup power plants. These critical systems are slated for healthcare facilities in North and South Iceland, including locations such as Vestmannaeyjar, Húsavík, Sauðárkrókur, Blönduós, and Siglufjörður. The implementation of these backup power solutions is deemed essential to guarantee uninterrupted care during adverse weather conditions or other electricity outages.

Beyond emergency power, the grants will also facilitate the acquisition of various other crucial medical equipment. This includes:

• General emergency medical equipment
• Specialized transport boxes for newborns

Separately, funding has also been approved for a CT scanner for the Southern Iceland Health Institute, further enhancing diagnostic capabilities in rural areas.
