30th Dhaka International Trade Fair Inaugurated in Purbachal, Emphasizing Export Diversification and Green Initiatives

Inauguration Marks Milestone for Bangladesh's Trade

The 30th Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF), Bangladesh's largest annual commercial event, was formally inaugurated on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center (BCFEC) in Purbachal, Rupganj, Narayanganj. The month-long fair, which will run until January 31, was inaugurated by Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin. The inauguration was initially scheduled for January 1 but was rescheduled due to a three-day national mourning period.

Jointly organized by the Ministry of Commerce and the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), the DITF serves as a crucial platform for showcasing Bangladesh's entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and overall trade development. Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin highlighted the fair's role in strengthening Bangladesh's brand image and fostering a positive global perception.

Key Objectives and Features of the 30th DITF

The primary objectives of this year's DITF include export product development and diversification, gaining access to new global markets, strengthening market connectivity, enhancing economic diplomacy, expanding international cooperation, improving the country's global image, and attracting foreign investment for sustainable economic growth. This year, 'Paper and Packaging Products' have been declared as the 'Product of the Year 2026' to encourage their production and marketing.

The fair features a total of 324 pavilions, stalls, and restaurants, allocated to local manufacturers, exporters, general business entities, and foreign companies. International participation includes 11 foreign pavilions from countries such as India, Turkey, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.

Sustainability and Modernization at the Forefront

A significant focus of the 30th DITF is environmental protection. The use of polythene bags and single-use plastics has been completely banned throughout the fair premises. As an eco-friendly alternative, shopping bags made of jute will be supplied at subsidized rates through the Ministry of Jute and Textiles.

Modernization efforts include the introduction of an e-ticketing system, allowing visitors to purchase tickets online and enter by scanning QR codes, in addition to traditional on-the-spot purchases. For the first time, an 'Export Enclave' titled 'Best of Bangladesh' has been established to showcase top-tier local products to international buyers. Additionally, a 'Bangladesh Square' has been created, featuring photographic displays commemorating significant national events like the Language Movement of 1952, the Liberation War of 1971, and the July 2024 movement.

Visitor Facilities and Security

To ensure a smooth experience for visitors, dedicated BRTC shuttle buses will operate from key locations, supplemented by discounted ride services through 'Pathao'. Entry tickets are priced at Tk 50 for adults and Tk 25 for children under 12. Freedom fighters, persons with disabilities, and those injured in the July 2024 movement will receive free entry upon showing valid identification.

Comprehensive security measures are in place, with the deployment of police, RAB, and army personnel, along with CCTV surveillance and watch towers. Other facilities include an electronics and furniture zone, a senior citizens' corner, two children's parks, an open cultural center, a cafeteria, and mobile courts to monitor food quality. The DITF, which began in 1995, moved to its permanent Purbachal venue in 2022.

Tk 50 entry fee is too much for many ordinary families. It excludes a lot of potential visitors.

International participation is crucial for global exposure, however, care must be taken to ensure local small and medium enterprises aren't overshadowed by larger foreign entities or well-connected businesses. The balance is key.

Thrilled to see so many foreign pavilions. This strengthens our international trade relations immensely.

Banning plastics inside the fair is easy. What about consistent enforcement across the country?

Another trade fair, same old promises. Will this actually translate into real, tangible growth or just a photo op?

The emphasis on export diversification and green initiatives is commendable, but the long-term impact depends on sustained government support beyond the fair. We need to see these policies truly implemented.

The ban on plastics and promotion of jute bags is an excellent, much-needed green initiative. Well done!

All that security personnel and CCTV is overkill. Seems more like a display of power than actual safety measures.
