Ireland Advances Virtual Healthcare with Nationwide Virtual Ward Expansion

Minister Highlights Progress in Virtual Care

Ireland's Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, recently underscored the substantial advancements made in the nation's virtual care initiatives. The expansion of virtual wards across the country is a key component of these efforts, designed to enhance patient outcomes and ease the strain on hospital resources.

Minister MacNeill, who assumed her role in January 2025, emphasized that these innovative models are not only 'improving patient outcomes and supporting recovery at home but also helping to alleviate pressure on our hospitals.' She commended the dedication of healthcare professionals and local teams for making this transformation possible.

Virtual Wards: Expanding Reach and Impact

The virtual ward program allows patients to receive hospital-level care from the comfort of their homes, utilizing remote monitoring devices and smart technology. This approach is a critical element of the broader 'Digital for Care: A Digital Health Framework for Ireland 2024-2030,' which aims to digitally transform health services and improve patient access.

Initial pilot programs demonstrated significant success:

• Two acute virtual wards at St. Vincent's University Hospital and University Hospital Limerick recorded over 1,500 admissions.
• These pilot wards accounted for approximately 13,800 virtual bed days.
• At St. Vincent's alone, over 1,000 patients have utilized the system, saving an estimated 12,000 bed-days.

Building on these results, four new virtual wards have been launched at Our Lady of Lourdes Drogheda, Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, Mercy Hospital Cork, and St Luke's Hospital Kilkenny. A fifth is planned for Galway University Hospital in early 2026. Furthermore, a virtual ward in Letterkenny reported an impressive 18 percent reduction in acute admissions in 2025.

Technology and Strategic Vision

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is actively expanding all types of virtual ward models nationwide, including community-based virtual wards. The system is designed to be consultant-governed and nurse-led, providing 24/7 staffing to ensure continuous patient care. The implementation of these wards is supported by partnerships, such as the one between the HSE and UK health tech firm Doccla, which provides the necessary technology kits.

By early 2026, Ireland's virtual bed capacity is projected to reach the equivalent of 120 virtual acute beds. This expansion aligns with the government's commitment to the full digitization of Irish healthcare records and information systems, backed by a substantial €9.25 billion allocation for health infrastructure and digitalization under the National Development Plan for 2026–2030. Other digital health initiatives include the launch of the HSE Health App earlier in 2025 and the development of an 'AI for Care' strategy.

The overarching goal of these virtual care initiatives is to provide high-quality care closer to home, reduce unnecessary hospital stays, and improve overall health system efficiency. Patients benefit from recovering in familiar surroundings, which can lead to better outcomes and a reduced risk of hospital-acquired infections. The ability to monitor patients remotely also aids in early detection of issues, potentially preventing readmissions.
