Gusty Winds Persist Across Latvia
Latvia is under the influence of strong, gusty northwesterly and northerly winds throughout Sunday, December 28, 2025. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) has issued a forecast indicating continued windy conditions across the country. Gusts are generally expected to reach between 15-19 meters per second (m/s), with coastal areas experiencing stronger gusts of up to 25 m/s in the morning. In the capital city of Riga, wind gusts are forecast to be around 20-23 m/s. The wind is anticipated to gradually subside during the latter half of the day.
An orange warning for strong winds, issued by the LVĢMC, was in effect from Saturday morning until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, highlighting the significant nature of the weather event.
Precipitation and Temperature Outlook
Alongside the strong winds, precipitation is expected in various parts of Latvia. The forecast indicates that this will primarily manifest as sleet and rain. In Riga, intermittent precipitation is likely during the first half of the day, with periods of clearer skies.
Air temperatures across Latvia are predicted to range from -1 to +4 degrees Celsius. Along the coastal regions, slightly milder temperatures of +4 to +5 degrees Celsius are expected. In Riga, the maximum air temperature will not exceed +2 to +4 degrees Celsius.
Observed Impacts from Ongoing Weather Event
The strong winds have already led to reported impacts across the country. Authorities have noted widespread damage and power outages resulting from a powerful cyclone that swept across Latvia over the weekend. By 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, the State Fire and Rescue Service had received 335 calls for assistance related to storm damage, predominantly concerning fallen trees. Power supply disruptions affected approximately 1,200 distribution network customers by Sunday afternoon, with earlier outages impacting around 7,000 households, particularly in coastal and central regions.

Constant disruptions, traffic chaos, and damaged property. This is getting ridiculous.

Another storm, another round of power outages. Our infrastructure clearly isn't ready for this.

They always forecast strong winds, but the actual impact often feels worse. Underestimated again.
