USA Dominates Opening Match at Grand Casino Arena
Saint Paul, Minnesota – The United States National Junior Team kicked off its 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship bid with a decisive 6-3 victory over Germany on Friday, December 26, 2025. The highly anticipated opening game, held at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, saw the Americans assert their offensive prowess, outshooting their opponents 47-21.
The win marks a strong start for the U.S., who are the two-time defending champions and are aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive gold medal in the tournament's 50th edition.
Zellers Leads Offensive Charge
Forward Will Zellers emerged as a key player for the United States, contributing significantly with two goals and one assist. Zellers, a native of Maple Grove, Minnesota, was a late addition to the roster but proved his value, scoring both of his goals in the second period.
The scoring for Team USA began early, with Max Plante finding the back of the net at 5:34 of the first period. Other American goal scorers included Chase Reid, Will Horcoff, and Cole Eiserman, who sealed the 6-3 lead late in the second period.
Germany's Resilient Effort
Despite the American offensive surge, Germany displayed resilience, particularly in the second period. After falling behind 3-0 in the first, Germany managed to cut the deficit to a single goal on two occasions. Timo Kose scored Germany's first goal late in the first period. In the second period, Simon Seidl and Lenny Boos each scored, bringing Germany within striking distance.
German goaltender Lennart Neisse faced a barrage of shots, making numerous saves throughout the game. On the other end, U.S. goalie Caleb Heil made 18 saves on 21 shots to secure the win.
Looking Ahead
The United States will continue its Group A play on Saturday, December 27, facing Switzerland. Germany will also be back in action on Saturday, taking on Slovakia. The tournament is being held across two venues in Minnesota, with Group A games, including this opener, hosted at the Grand Casino Arena.

A solid offensive display to start the tournament is great, but allowing Germany to score three times shows there are still defensive kinks to iron out before facing stronger teams.

A win is a win, but they looked sloppy at times.
