2026: A Year for Local Politics in Austria
Austria is set for a relatively quiet election year in 2026, with no federal or state-level ballots currently scheduled. The electoral focus will instead shift to municipal council elections in two prominent cities: St. Pölten and Graz. This marks a departure from recent intensive election years, offering a breather for the government at both federal and state levels.
St. Pölten to Hold Municipal Elections in January
The capital of Lower Austria, St. Pölten, will be the first to head to the polls for its municipal council election on January 25, 2026. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) in St. Pölten has already announced its candidate list, featuring 84 individuals vying for seats on the city council. The incumbent Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), led by long-time mayor Matthias Stadler, will seek re-election, having maintained an absolute majority in the 2021 municipal council election with 56.02 percent of the vote. A total of seven lists are expected to run, including the SPÖ, ÖVP, FPÖ, Greens, NEOS, KPÖ, and the 'Multicultural Society'.
Graz Municipal Council Election Set for September
Later in the year, the Styrian state capital, Graz, will hold its municipal council election in September 2026. This election is anticipated to draw significant national attention, particularly given that the city has been governed by a communist mayor, Elke Kahr, since 2021. Kahr, who surprisingly secured the top position from former mayor Siegfried Nagl (ÖVP) four years prior, is expected to run again. Currently, the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) governs Graz in a coalition with the Greens and SPÖ. The Freedom Party (FPÖ) has already named René Apfelknab as its top candidate for the Graz election.
Absence of Federal and State-Level Ballots
Unlike previous years, 2026 will not feature any federal legislative elections. The last parliamentary election in Austria took place on September 29, 2024, with the next one constitutionally mandated to occur by 2029. Similarly, no state-level elections are scheduled for 2026, with the next provincial ballots expected in Upper Austria and Tyrol in autumn 2027. This electoral calm at the higher levels allows for a concentrated focus on local governance and community issues in the cities holding elections.

No federal elections means less accountability for our national leaders. Disappointing.

Focusing only on local elections risks neglecting critical national challenges.

It's good to see municipal governance getting the spotlight, but I worry that the lack of federal contests might make national politicians too comfortable and less responsive.

The focus on local democracy is admirable, particularly in Graz with its unique leadership. However, the national implications of such distinct local political shifts could be quite polarizing.

St. Pölten just recycling the same old politicians. No real change there.
