Magyar, a former Fidesz member and ex-husband of former Justice Minister Judit Varga, has emerged as a significant challenger to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's long-standing political dominance. His criticism highlights a perceived contradiction in Fidesz's policy towards Hungarian minorities abroad, particularly in a region with a substantial Hungarian population.

The Controversial Endorsement of George Simion

The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), the primary political representative for ethnic Hungarians in Romania, strongly opposed Simion's candidacy. The UDMR warned that a victory for Simion could jeopardize minority rights and urged its constituents to support centrist candidate Nicușor Dan, who ultimately won the presidency. Orbán later clarified that Hungary does not interfere in Romania's elections and that the UDMR's position should be decisive.

Transylvania, a historical region within Romania, is home to approximately 1.2 million ethnic Hungarians, constituting about 5.5% of Romania's total population.
