Electrica Acquires Moldovan Energy Company, Expanding Regional Footprint

Strategic Acquisition Approved

Societatea Energetica Electrica S.A. (Electrica), a prominent Romanian energy company, announced on December 19, 2025, the approval by its Board of Directors to acquire Electrica Furnizare Grup SRL - Chisinau, a Moldovan energy entity. The decision was made during a board meeting held on December 18, 2025. This acquisition involves Electrica purchasing all shares, 100% owned by its subsidiary, Electrica Furnizare S.A. (EFSA), in the Chisinau-based company.

Electrica Furnizare Grup SRL - Chisinau is registered in the Republic of Moldova and specializes in a range of energy-related activities, including:

  • Electricity production
  • Electricity and gas supply/trading
  • Electrical installation works
The exact purchase price for the acquisition will be determined following an evaluation report.

Part of Broader Expansion Strategy

This strategic acquisition aligns with the Electrica Group's development strategy for the 2025-2027 period. The plan outlines substantial investments and acquisitions totaling approximately 1 billion euros, both within Romania and in international markets. This initiative represents one of the most significant expansion efforts by a state-majority-owned company in the energy sector.

The move is expected to bolster Electrica's regional operations and consolidate its presence in the Moldovan energy market.

Financial Performance and Future Goals

The acquisition comes amidst a period of strong financial performance for the Electrica Group. In the first nine months of 2025, the company reported a net profit of 839.8 million lei, marking a substantial 178% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Operational revenues also saw a significant rise, reaching 8.918 billion lei, up by 20.9%.

Looking ahead, Electrica has set ambitious targets for 2030, focusing on renewable energy. These goals include achieving an installed capacity of 1 GW in green energy production and developing 900 MWh of energy storage capacity. These expansion plans are financially supported by a recent bond issuance on international markets, which raised 500 million euros, earmarked for strategic investments and strengthening the group's position in the regional energy landscape.

This acquisition strengthens Electrica's position, which is good for Romania. However, it's vital to ensure Moldova truly benefits and isn't just becoming a pawn in a larger regional energy game, especially given Russia's historical influence.

While Electrica's expansion is impressive for regional stability, we must consider Moldova's long-term energy sovereignty in the face of larger geopolitical pressures.
